The DIES Legendi is the annual celebration of the Gutenberg Teaching College. This event is dedicated to the appreciation of good teaching and teaching staff. By awarding the teaching prizes, excellent teaching staff at JGU are made visible and honored for their commitment. The DIES Legendi offers all (former) GLK grantees and all JGU members who are interested in and support teaching a welcome opportunity for exchange and networking.

The DIES Legendi 2026 will take place on November 12, 2026.

The DIES Legendi took place on November 26, 2025 in the Alte Mensa. During the event, the teaching award winners from faculties 01, 04, 05, 07, 09 and 10 as well as the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts from the winter semester 2024/2025 and the summer semester 2025 were honored. The event also offered the opportunity to talk to the teaching award winners and exchange ideas with co-workers. This year, the DIES Legendi was also dedicated to the topic of “Facts and fakes in teaching”.

In addition to the presentation of the teaching awards for the SoSe 2021, the focus of the DIES LEGENDI 2021 was on the 10th anniversary of the GLK, which was celebrated with the premiere of the GLK Film. The DIES LEGENDI also offered a great opportunity to meet old and new acquaintances who are also committed to good teaching at JGU.

The annual DIES LEGENDI is a day of special honor for teaching at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). The JGU Teaching Awards and the Gutenberg Teaching Award are presented in recognition of outstanding achievements in teaching and innovative aspects of teaching are presented and discussed. This year, the results of the first Gutenberg Ideeathlon will also be presented at the DIES LEGENDI. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the DIES LEGENDI 2020 will be held online using the BigBlueButton conference system.

In order to pay tribute to the achievements of the teaching staff this year and to give them space for discussion, the GLK organized a round table discussion with the President of JGU, Professor Georg Krausch, in the run-up to the DIES LEGENDI on 6 October 2020, which was dedicated to the question of good teaching, especially in these extraordinary times. Two student participants were also invited to the discussion to substitute this perspective as well.

Due to this year’s extraordinary situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Gutenberg Teaching Award ceremony also took place virtually. The Gutenberg Teaching Award for 2018 goes to Prof. Geoffrey Brennan, Professor Emeritus of Economics at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, for his development and leadership of innovative interdisciplinary degree programs and his decades-long commitment to young researchers. The 2019 prize was awarded to Professor Mills Kelly, Professor of History at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, USA, for his innovative teaching methods in history and his publications on teaching in the digital age, among other things
